Shopify Development
Shopify suits brands that want fast time-to-market with hosting, checkout and PCI handled for them. The trade-off is that the platform decides a lot on your behalf, so the work is in building a storefront that stays flexible for merchandising without accumulating apps that slow every page down.
What a Shopify Development engagement covers
Custom theme development
Built against your real catalog, not a demo store with five tidy products.
Structured content modelling
Metafields and metaobjects, so content lives in data rather than hard-coded in templates.
App audit and integration
What each app does, what still depends on it, and what duplicates something you already have.
Checkout customization
Within what Shopify genuinely permits, made clear before anything gets designed.
A performance budget
Applied to the theme during the build, not retrofitted after launch.
Replatform and migration
Products, customers and URLs moved across, with redirects so existing rankings survive.
What a Shopify engagement is usually trying to fix.
Merchandising without a developer
The team changes what is on the page without waiting on a deploy.
Fewer overlapping apps
A measurably lighter storefront, with duplication removed rather than tolerated.
A theme that hands over
Readable and extensible by whoever works on it next.
The approach, step by step
Audit what exists
Review the current theme, installed apps and catalog structure before proposing anything. Most Shopify problems are accumulated decisions rather than a single fault.
Model the content
Decide what belongs in metafields, metaobjects and sections so the team can merchandise without touching code.
Build against real data
Develop with your actual catalog, including the awkward products — bundles, wide variant sets, long specifications — not a clean sample set.
Measure before handover
Check Core Web Vitals in the field, not just a lab score, and fix what the theme itself is responsible for.
Questions we get asked
Do you work with Shopify Plus as well as standard Shopify?+
Yes. Plus mainly adds checkout extensibility, scripts and B2B features — the storefront work is largely the same, and the decision usually comes down to whether you need those specific capabilities.
Can you customize the Shopify checkout?+
Within what the platform allows, which is deliberately limited and differs between plans. It is worth being clear early about what is genuinely possible rather than designing something that cannot ship.
We have a lot of apps and the site feels slow. Is that fixable?+
Usually, yes. App scripts are one of the most common causes of poor interaction responsiveness on Shopify. The first step is an audit of what each app does and whether anything still depends on it.
Do you build custom themes or start from a purchased one?+
Either, depending on budget and how distinctive the storefront needs to be. Starting from a well-built theme is often the pragmatic choice; the important part is not forking it into something unmaintainable.
